About Us
Focus Martial Arts was founded in the fall of 2007 with the goal of providing Martial Arts training for everyone. Initially specializing with children with social skills difficulties and developmental disabilities including a host of disorders along the autism spectrum, Sensei’s Chris Malloy and Kelly Froese initially began teaching Martial Arts classes for the Discovered Treasures summer camp in the summer of 2007; beginning a working relationship with Main Street Community Services, and continue to teach on-going special needs classes within this organization.
It is the aim of Focus Martial Arts to implement Martial Arts programs in several pre-existing childcare locations, bringing the benefits of Martial Arts to as many children as possible. It is through these many organizations that we endeavour to create a community of responsible Martial Artists by giving everyone the opportunity to gain from the many benefits that Martial Arts training provides.
Sensei Chris Malloy began his Martial Arts training in 1995 at Douvris Martial Arts & Fitness Centres in Ottawa Ontario. Quickly finding a passion in Martial Arts training, Sensei Chris rose through the ranks and received his Shodan (first degree black belt) in 1998, his Nidan (second degree black belt) in 2000, and finally his Sandan (third degree black belt) in 2005.
In addition to his training in karate, Sensei Chris also had the opportunity to study Judo for 2 ½ years at Douvris, and has been teaching all ages and belt levels since 1998. In the summer of 2005, Sensei Chris filled in for a friend (Sensei Kelly Froese – with whom Sensei Chris would later co-found Focus Martial Arts with) who was offering Martial Arts lessons at Main Street Community Service’s summer camp for children with special needs, and began to develop ways to modify his teaching style to best assist children within this programs.
In the summer of 2007, both Sensei’s Chris Malloy and Kelly Froese were delighted to be invited back to teach Martial Arts once again at Main Street Community Service’s Discovered Treasures summer camp, which ultimately lead to a strong working relationship with Main Street and to the founding of Focus Martial Arts. Currently, Sensei Chris Malloy is involved teaching on-going special needs classes for Main Street Community Services.
Sensei Kelly Froese started in the Martial Arts in 2000 at Douvris Martial Arts in Ottawa. Quickly finding a passion in Martial Arts training, Sensei Kelly achieved his Shodan (first degree black belt) in the summer of 2003. He reached Nidan (second degree black belt) two years later in the summer of 2005
In the summer of 2005, Sensei Kelly began an association with Main Street Community Services by teaching at their summer camp for kids with special needs. In addition to his time with Main Street, Sensei Kelly has an extensive background working with children. He has worked in a number of group homes and programs designed for kids with Behavioral Challenges and Developmental Disabilities. He has operated summer camps, birthday parties and numerous other kid’s programs. He continues to work with kids through his association with Main Street Community Services working in their After School, Respite Care and Martial Arts programs.
